Don’t let your time rule you. Rule your time.

Time is a strange thing.

For one, it seems to be extraordinarily flexible. It flies when we’re busy, and it drags when we’re bored.

When we have time on our hands, we often don’t make very good use of it.

When we are pressed for time, we can suddenly become incredibly productive.

We’ll always find time for the things we like to do, and never find the time for tasks we don’t enjoy.

And, of course, as solo professionals, time is always running out. Time is our enemy. Or, at least, it often seems to be.

The trouble is, when we allow ourselves to think in these ways, we are handing over control of our days to the concept of time. We defer to the power of time. We relinquish the driver’s seat of our business, and submit to the rules of time.

Yes, time passes. There is no avoiding that.

But we can still get back in the driver’s seat and take control.

In the words of Albert Einstein, “The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once.”

That what we need to avoid – the feeling that everything is happening at the same time.

You wake up in the morning, think of all the tasks you have to complete before the end of the day – and it all becomes a blur. It feels like you are going to have to get everything done, all at once.

Not so. Sit back and make a list of what needs to be done.

Prioritize the list. Discard everything that doesn’t actually HAVE to be completed today.

Allocate a block of time to each task.

Then stick to the plan. The fact that time appears to be flexible can work in your favor. You can bend it to your will. When you allocate a block of time to a task, you’ll often be amazed to discover that when you’re done, it took precisely the amount of time you allocated.

It’s just like with written exams. It’s a three-hour exam, and guess what, you get done in exactly three hours.

Use time. Be the boss of your time.

Time becomes our enemy only when we relinquish control and decide we “don’t have time” or “can’t afford the time”.

Time works in our favor when we rule it, structure it, and use it productively.

This is one of those inner-game things. You have to flip the switch in your own mind – from “time rules me” to “I rule time”.
