Taking one step at a time may not be cool, but it works.

In the world of doing business online, we are bombarded with offers promising to show how we can get rich quick.

Sign up, act fast and make tons of money by Tuesday.

Nice idea, but it rarely works.

And if you are launching or growing a freelance writing or copywriting business, the get-rich-fast approach doesn’t work well at all.

What does work well is to keep your head down and take at least one step forward each day.

That step might be the addition of a page to your web site. It might be a call to a prospective client. It might be the submission of an article to a trade journal. It might be the addition of five new Twitter followers.

These are steps outside of the daily process of getting your work done. I’m not talking about the time you put in to get today’s writing assignment completed and off to the client. I’m talking about the daily steps you should take to grow your business.

A few months ago I started work with a coaching client who was re-launching her copywriting business in a whole new direction. One of the things I advised was that she start writing articles and submitting them to trade journals in her niche.

The idea was to help establish herself as an expert and authority in that niche. And to help her reach a large audience of prospective clients.

When I gave that advice, I knew the process would be a struggle for her. I didn’t doubt that she could write some great articles. But I did wonder whether she would stick with it long enough to see some results.

Each step she took, each article she wrote, didn’t bring her new business the next day, week or even the next month.

In fact, it took months before she saw any real return on all that effort.

Then this morning she wrote to me and said, “I'm getting inquiries from my trade articles almost every day.”

That’s a pretty good result.

And that outcome was the result of a steady process of taking one more step forward each day.

In her case she wrote articles. And from my own experience I know that article marketing works well.

But the point of this article is not to suggest that you start writing articles. It is to suggest that you invest time every day to take at least one step forward towards a longer-term goal.

If you choose to take just one step EVERY day of your working week, the benefits compound quickly.

Don’t go for the fast fix. There usually isn’t one.

Focus instead on long-term growth and take a step each day until you get there.
