Identify what kind of freelance work makes you feel good, then leverage what you learn.

One of the things I do during the first session with a new coaching client is ask this question...

"Over the last two years, which job or project has given you the most enjoyment and satisfaction?"

It's an important question because it helps identify an important intersection point.

Let me explain.

Imagine each of the following statements represents a pencil line drawn on paper:

1. I felt totally qualified to do the job well.

2. I felt no resistance or hesitation while working on this project.

3. I felt highly valued for the work I was doing.

4. I felt appropriately rewarded financially for the work I did.

5. The entire experience made me feel good.

When you work on a project where all five of these statements or pencil lines intersect, that's the kind of work you should be focusing on all the time. That's when we enjoy our work most and perform at our best.

Even two or three of these lines intersecting can prompt us to observe, "Hey, that project felt pretty good. I enjoyed that."

But what we really want to work towards is the point where we can make all five statements about every job we take on.

When that happens we know that we have found the right kind of work, work that can satisfy us professionally, financially and emotionally.

Here's a simple three-step process you might want to try...

1. Think about the projects you have enjoyed working on most over the last two years, and then see how many of those five statements apply.

2. Now look at those jobs side by side and try to identify what is was about them that made them stand out when compared to other projects.

3. Whatever common elements you discover, use those as a benchmark to determine which new projects you decide to seek out in the future.

In other words, deliberately go out and look for work that makes you feel good.

The more you do that, the better you'll feel and the more you will earn.
