Remember this about your prospective freelance clients – they don’t know you.

I asked one of my coaching clients to write a marketing plan for her new business venture.

About a third of the way through she wrote the following.

“Before they get to know me, my prospects' initial attitude towards me will be indifference. They don't know me. They don't know anything about my background. They haven't been exposed to my products.”

I think that’s a great insight, and a very honest insight.

It’s all too easy to assume that your prospective clients somehow know you.

They don’t.

It’s even easier to make the assumption that your prospects will automatically be impressed by your web site and resume.

Even if you do have an amazing reputation, my coaching client is still right. Your past history may be an indicator of your talent to your future clients, but it’s not enough.

You can’t just assume that what you have done before with make it easy to get new work in the future.

You have to keep working just as hard on your new clients as you did when you started out.

Make sure they have all the necessary information about you, your services and your track record. Assume nothing.

Don’t just approach them and then sit back, waiting for a signed contract. Just because you are who you are.

In other words, show a little humility.

Nobody likes arrogance.

Recognize the importance of each new job to your prospective clients. Work hard with them to show them how you can help them achieve their goals. Give them the information, time and attention they need to feel confident about working with you.

Right now, they don’t know you.

It’s your responsibility to change that.
