The difference between thinking small and thinking big is extraordinarily narrow. It is just a tiny step from one to the other, but the consequences can be extraordinary.
Recently, during two coaching calls on the same day, I asked both clients if they had scheduled and started making cold calls.
Coincidentally, both clients were at about the same stage in the development of their businesses, and both had decided that cold calling would be part of their marketing plan.
Client number one had made 5 calls the previous week.
Client number two had made 53 calls over the same period.
Client number one had picked up no new work.
Client number two had picked up four new assignments. And he had plenty of follow-up calls to make to those companies which had expressed an interest, but didn’t have any work right now.
Here is another example.
Over the course of a week a client had planned to add more pages to his website. He added 3. Over the same period I was working on a new website project of my own and, working on it part-time, had added 30 new pages.
Another example. (Not made up. All these examples are true.)
One client I have is pitching an article to a local website, hoping to get some extra exposure.
Another client I have is working on a book idea, and he has been talking with the producers at Oprah.
What is happening here is that some people are cautious and timid about the way in which they move forward with their business. Other people are bold.
But what I find is that this isn’t carved in stone. It’s not like the timid person will always be timid.
Sometimes someone will describe a cautious idea to me and I’ll suggest something a lot bigger and bolder.
Do people say, “Oh no, I couldn’t do that”? Not in my experience. More often than not the response I get is, “Oh, OK.”
That’s scary.
It’s like we all have the capacity to think and act bigger, but many of us don’t. However, with just a little nudge we can go from small to big and transform our work and our lives.
So how about you? Do you think and act small or big?
If you are thinking small, here’s a small nudge for you: Think and act bigger, starting right now.
