I wasn’t going to write an article this week. I’m worn out. Been writing too much. Time for a break.
So I thought I’d skip the article and this week’s issue of the AskNickUsborne.com newsletter.
Mind you, I don’t like to miss a scheduled issue. So I thought maybe I’d just write a short letter saying I was giving myself a break, a breather, and would be back next week.
The next thing I know, I thought it might be useful to share an article on why it is OK to take a break sometimes.
So now I’m in the weird position of not taking a break but, instead, writing an article about how you should do what I’m not doing. How’s that for confusing?
The bottom line is that it really is OK to stop and take a deep breath from time to time.
It’s not good to miss deadlines you have committed to with clients. But when you are spending time building your own business, and find yourself getting dog tired, it can really help to step away from your desk for a while.
I’m tired right now, so I’m taking a four-day weekend. In some ways, I shouldn’t. But I know that if I rest a little now, I’ll perform better next week.
I also know that stepping away from my desk for a few days will help me refocus on what I’m doing and where my business is pointing. For that reason alone it makes sense to take a little time out sometimes.
But most of all, I think as freelancers we need to be kind to ourselves. It’s tough, because when we stop working our business stops working. We are alone and the pressure to keep on going is sometimes overwhelming.
If you don’t have a spouse or partner to help you pace yourself, you can sometimes overwork to the point where you are not working efficiently.
So sometimes, when you have been pushing yourself hard, give yourself a break and take a little time away from your desk.
You’ll probably regain the lost time through an increase in productivity when you get back to work.
OK. I’m out of here. Time to go for a walk, start a good book, enjoy my family.
