Are you just a freelancer or do you have a freelance business?

This is a topic that came up in a coaching call this morning. I was the one who asked the question: “Do you just want to be a freelance copywriter, or do you want a freelance copywriting business?”

I think it’s an important question.

Far too many people set out to become freelance writers or copywriters in a way which is, to be brutally honest, amateur.

They create a quick web site and simply say, “Hey, I’m a freelance copywriter. I’ll work on anything. Please hire me.”

That’s OK. But only if you are not going to be relying on your freelance income to pay the bills, and only if you don’t have any ambition to build something bigger and better.

If you want to create a freelance BUSINESS then you have to plan and launch it the way you would with any other kind of business.

You need to find a gap in the market.

You need to offer something your prospects are hungry for.

You need to write a business plan and a marketing plan.

You need a website and other marketing materials that make you look as good as you plan to be.

It’s really not OK just to jump in and see what happens. Because what will happen isn’t going to be very exciting or profitable.

Instead, you need to apply basic business-creation principles to your freelance career.

Be a business. Set goals. Achieve specific milestones along the way.

That’s the way to have fun and make money.
