As the boss of your own freelance business, how good are you?
As freelance writers and copywriters, our expertise at writing is only part of what it takes to succeed.
We also need to be good marketers of our own services.
And we need to be good managers of our time.
And we need to be good administrators of our business.
That's a bit of a bummer, because a lot of us start working at home with just the first skill – being able to write well.
Then slowly at first, we figure out that we need those other skills as well. We need to figure out a strong marketing strategy for our business. We need to use our time productively. And we need to run our business effectively.
Hovering around up there at five thousand feet, looking down on all these activities, is our inner "boss".
This inner boss takes a high-level view of our business and gets to see the balance of all that we do, all our strengths and all our weaknesses.
How is your inner boss doing? Do you even have one? Do you ever step back (or fly up) and take a long distance view of your business?
Is your boss keeping an eye on your goals for the future? Is he or she letting you know when your daily "busyness" is getting in the way of your long-term business goals?
Being one's own boss is probably the toughest thing for freelancers.
It's hard enough keeping up with all the tasks and projects that need taking care of down here at ground level. It's really tough to find the time to pause and take a look down from five thousand feet and see the big picture.
But it's essential.
If we don’t take the long view, then we'll never achieve a balance between doing what needs to be done today and what needs to be done to build our future.
The only way to get into the habit of being an effective boss of your business is to schedule time for it.
Put aside an hour a week. A specific hour each week. Put aside a half day each month. Put aside a block of two days each year.
Use this time to step back and make sure you are not only making the money you need for this month, but are also on track to build a more profitable and secure business for the future.
