Make some kind of a splash between now and the end of the year.

Hopefully, you market your freelance business on a regular basis. Effective marketing is not something that happens on a sporadic basis. Smart freelancers do something to promote their services on a weekly or even daily basis.

Here are some of the things I have done:

- Write articles for submission to trade journals, magazines and websites within my niche.

- Send out a newsletter every couple of weeks.

- Write to past clients, just to make sure they know I’m still around and working.

- Renew contact with an old colleague or fellow copywriter.

- Take part in relevant forums and lists.

- Update my Facebook page or other social media pages.

- Let people know I’m alive and still breathing each day with Twitter.

These are some of the little things you should consider doing regularly. Maybe you have a few of your own marketing tactics that have worked well for you.

However...

In my experience these kinds of marketing activities simply maintain a fairly low level of awareness. By doing these small things you are maintaining a consistent level of noise in your marketplace. But not much more.

If you want to raise the bar a little, or a lot, then you need to do something bigger that will enable you to make a lot more noise.

Here are a few things I have done to raise the bar.

- Speak at conferences, offline and online.

- Write a book, a course or something else I can publish.

- Get on the radio or even TV.

In each example, I am leveraging the reach of the conference organizer, publisher or media channel to turn up the volume and reach a larger audience.

There are other things I have seen copywriters do to make a bigger splash – like fundraising for charity.

For myself, I try to make a big splash at least twice a year. I do all the other stuff in between. But I also know that if I am to raise my personal brand above the chatter of a thousand other copywriters, I sometimes have to do something big.

What about you? How are you going to raise your personal brand above the ambient chatter of every other copywriter? What can you do between now and the end of the year that will really get you noticed and extend your reach?

Think of something and start planning.
