Plenty of articles have been written about asking questions as a sales and marketing tactic. When you are trying to sell a product or service to someone, you can engage prospects more deeply by asking a question.
But that isn’t what this article is about.
This article is about asking YOURSELF some tough questions. Much less has been written about the power of asking questions about yourself and your business.
To illustrate the point, here are two ways of thinking about improving a particular aspect of your freelance business.
Approach #1 is to make a statement: “I need my prospects to understand that I am the best in my field.”
Approach #2 is to ask yourself a question: “How can I show my prospects that I am the best in my field?”
The statement is closed. The question is open.
The statement implies that the responsibility for “getting it” lies with your prospects. The question places the responsibility exactly where it belongs - with you.
The statement takes the opportunity out of your hands. It’s in the hands of your prospect. The question puts the opportunity for improvement in your hands. Now you have total control.
Not every statement/question pairing needs to be quite like this. One can make better statements, and can ask weaker questions.
I use the example to illustrate three powerful elements of asking questions.
1. Questions open things up and provide the space to come up with utterly new and unexpected answers.
2. Questions place responsibility for the success of your freelance business where it belongs, with you.
3. Questions are empowering, because when you frame the question around yourself you also give yourself the means to make change.
Take a look at your own freelance business. Consider those parts where you would like to see improvements. Then start asking yourself some tough questions.
And give your mind the space and time to wander far and wide.
Don’t just jump at the first, easy answer.
Try harder.
